strontium hydrogen phosphate, also known as strontium phosphinate dibasic (SrHPO4), is a crystalline white odourless salt that belongs to the group of phosphorus phosphates. It is a highly water-soluble salt that is prepared by partial neutralization of phosphoric acid with potassium hydroxide.
Strontium is a stable and highly abundant element that occurs naturally in celestite and strontianite. It is also found in the human body as a trace element, as well as in some animals and plants.
It is used as a reagent in analytical chemistry, as a detergent and as an anti-caking additive. It is also a component of textile, leather auxiliary and fertilizers. It is used as a scale inhibitor in water treatment plant.
Chemical Structure: Its crystallographic structure consists of triclinic a-SrHPO4, hexagonal b-SrHPO4 and orthorhombic c-SrHPO4. The a-SrHPO4 crystals have a crystallite size of 30 nm while the b-SrHPO4 and c-SrHPO4 crystals are larger with an average crystallite size of 80 nm.
Uses: It is widely used as an emulsifier and buffer in foods and pharmaceuticals, dietary supplement, anti-caking additive in powdered products, scale inhibitor, reagent and buffer in analytical chemistry, in detergents and as an anti-condensate. It is also a saline laxative to treat constipation.
It is a versatile compound that has been studied for various applications, including luminescent materials, all-solid-state lasers, surface conditioner, ceramics batteries, fuel cells and adsorption of heavy metals and dyes. It is also useful as a drug carrying agent in biological systems.
